Sea ice covers large areas of the sea in both the nothern and southern parts of the globe. With decreasing ice cover in the Arctic, it is important to acquire knowledge about how the sea and the ice affect each other. This thesis conserns modeling and numerical simulations of wave propagation in open sea and in sea ice, based on the non-linear cubic Schrödinger equation. A numerical method is presented based on an explicit finite difference scheme with å fourth-order Runge-Kutta time integration method. In terms of numerical experiments, results are presented for time and space development of simulation of open and ice-covered sea. In the case of ice-covered sea, a damping term must be added in the Schrödinger equation to capture the features of wave propagation in ice.
