This MA thesis analyses the phenomenon of ‘false news’ during and after the 2016 US Presidential election in conjunction with the establishment of the Norwegian newsroom Faktisk in 2017. The starting-point of the thesis is the question of why several leading Norwegian media institutions collaborated on establishing a fact-checking newsroom in 2017. By tracing this process, the thesis documents the background of this newsroom as imagined by the actors themselves, while also juxtaposing their perspectives with the political climate in which it originated. An important purpose of the thesis has been to find possible explanations as to why leading media actors within a short space of time chose to spend considerable resources on establishing such a newsroom in Norway. A central explanation discussed in this study is that this newsroom was established not simply to fact-check public utterances or uncover false news, but also to restore trust in leading Norwegian media. In documenting this process, the thesis touches on key questions concerning the legitimacy of the press, its ideals and practices, and fears for its future.
