This thesis concerns the bishop s establishment of a distinct role in the period between the church councils in Nicaea and Constantinople, i.e. 325–381. As the role was in need of legitimacy, I ve also considered what sources of authority the bishop had at his disposal. Through a closer study of Basil the great of Caesarea, I ve established the existence of a class division within the episcopacy in the second half of the fourth century, where an élite peopled mainly by curiales made use of paideia and firm ecclesial authority also took the role of local élite, in lieu of curiales and other patrons who were displaced during the third century. Through a closer study of this élite and how they established their authority and a clear social standing, I ve been able to trace change and continuity in the contemporary culture, towards what would become a clearly Byzantine culture in the period after the Eastern Roman Empire s dissolution into barbarian kingdoms.
