Abstract
The music industry is changing, and extensive use of file sharing is threatening copyright holders’ possibilities of profit. Because the technological development can’t be held back, the challenge of the industry is to find out whether, and in such case how, it can be controlled. This thesis studies sale of digital music-files on the internet based on the following research question: How is the development of the technology “legal online distribution of music” being influenced by technological possibilities, social interests and commercial demands? In order to answer this question, technological, social and commercial interests will be defined and the relationship between the three actors - technology, users and enterprise - will be analysed. The technology is represented by Microsoft’s online music store MSN Music, the social dimension by 12 potential users of this specific technology, and the enterprise by Helge Birkelund, head of the services presented by MSN Norway. The thesis aims to gain a nuanced picture of the dynamics between these three parts by combining technical principles of web-design with theories based in the humanities and in the social sciences. It concludes that continuous development is ensured by commercial demands and quality by technological interests, while strong social forces control the direction of the technological development.
