Undersøkelsen viser likevel at forskningsinstitusjonene samlet sett utnytter Internett bedre i 2000 enn i 1998. Institusjonenes forskningsformidling gjennom Internett virker i de fleste tilfeller tilfeldig og i liten grad institusjonalisert.
This study examines research institutions' use of Internet for mediating science. The thesis' main approach is: How and to what extent do Norwegian research institutions use Internet as a medium for communicating science? This question is answered by quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative investigation is based upon content analysis of 150 research institutions' Internet sites in 1998, and 179 institutions' in 2000. The qualitative examination consists of interviews with persons responsible for the Internet sites of three selected institutions. Habermas' theory of communicative action and system theory from the field of Public Relations, and hypertext- and media theory, are the basis for the analysis. This study concludes that information on scientific projects and research findings is not a priority on Norwegian research institutions' Internet sites. Few of the institutions make use of the Internet's possibilities as an information- and media channel. However, this investigation shows that the research institutions used Internet more efficient in 2000 than in 1998. The institutions' science communication through Internet are in few cases a formal part of the organisational procedures, and only on rare occasions institutionalised.
