This master’s thesis deals with how children and youths can explore and expand their understanding of their own identity through audiovisuality in children´s television and film. In the thesis, I present audiovisual analyzes made of excerpts from the children´s television series Sangfoni and the Disney film Encanto. Some main aspects I relate to children and youth´s identity exploration via audiovisuality are diverse representation and sense of ‘empowerment’. Through the thesis, I will argue how communication of the audiovisual may appeal to different age groups, and how this leads to my different video examples being able to meet children and youth´s on their own terms. In the end, I will link my conclusion to a larger context, where I point out how my findings from Sangfoni and Encanto can have an impact on children and youth´s identity development at a larger social level.
