This master thesis discusses the visual and scientific investigations, as well as the conservation of a privately owned late 19th century still-life, measuring 68 x 52 cm. The painting has retained its original stretching and was painted in oil medium on a lead white and barium sulphate ground. The painting was originally unvarnished but a varnish layer was applied in the 1980’s. UV-light, IR imaging, pXRF, FT-IR, polarized microscopy and SEM-EDS was used to investigate the original and secondary materials. The painting materials used was consistent with those used in the time period. The unoriginal varnish probably consisted of a natural resin. The removal of this varnish is the main concern of this thesis, and the challenges and ethical considerations regarding the removal of a varnish from a painting intended to be left unvarnished is discussed. The varnish was removed using isopropanol and acetone. Evolon® was used to reduce the amount of mechanical action on the paint surface, which allowed sensitive paints to be cleaned without paint loss. The visual effect of the varnish removal was documented using a spectrophotometer. Flaking paint was consolidated and old retouchings were removed and replaced. Due to the presence of arsenic based pigments in the painting, it is important that the painting is not handled without gloves. It is also recommended that the painting is presented behind glass.
