Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to examine any deficiencies in the legal safeguards offered to suspects under criminal arrest or pre-trial detention in Norway and China. All though the legislation appears to adequately ensure such persons' rights, the thesis investigates the shortcomings of the legislation by comparing Norwegian and Chinese criminal procedure law. The thesis covers topics such as arrest, alternative measures to detention, pre-trial detention and the conditions of pre-trial incarceration, including the prevalence of isolation and the occurrence deaths. The thesis is based on Norwegian and Chinese legal sources, Norwegian and English secondary literature and cases reported by the media.
