Abstract
This thesis explores how Norwegian musicians use social media in self-marketing and what this can teach us. Data was obtained through research interviews and content analysis of successful marketing campaigns. The results of this project showed that the musicians included in the study use social media as a tool to maintain and strengthen existing ties with their fans, and as a platform for creating new ones. Social network sites make direct communication between musicians and their audiences possible and are used to create a mutual engagement between musicians and fans. Today, recommendations from friends often make a larger impact on consumers than traditional advertising, and it benefits musicians to build strong relationships with their audiences. This can stimulate positive word-of-mouth, and it can be advantageous to achieve the loyalty of fans and to attract new fans. Musicians that have an established fan base in social media can convey information to their fans quickly and aim information directly toward their target audiences. Social media is also used for attracting attention from the press. Creating this dynamic between social media and traditional media can be advantageous, especially for lesser-known musicians.
