The patient`s resourses are of decisive importance in the rehabilitation process. The patient`s will to recover is a powerful and important resourse.
Purpose: Visualize the strategies and methods nurses use when they succeed in mobilizing the patient`s will to co-operate towards goals of self-care for the purpose of giving nurses a method when providing care for patient`s whith a lot of resistance in the rehabilitation process.
Method: A descriptive, qualitative study whith interviews and narratives as the method to gather data. The study is a study of nursing intervention through narratives. Data were analysed using a content analysis.
Findings: The nurse`s strategies/methods to mobilize the patient`s will to co-operate towards goals of self-care could be categorized as: -methods that deal with the rehabilitation, -methods that deal with the relationship between the nurse and the patient. Methods that deal with the rehabilitation: Mobilizing the patient`s will was facilitated by meaning that activated will, and by understanding, knowledge and strength that activated will. Methods that deal with the relationship between the nurse and the patient: Co-operation between the nurse and the patient was facilitated by establishing trust, interaction, contact and communication with the patient, and by balancing between autonomy and clear expression of expectations. Balancing between autonomy and clear expression of expectations required a certain amount of contact and communication between the nurse and the patient. It also required that the patient could trust the nurse, and that the patient had some control over his own situation.
