Abstract
The communication purpose of news reportage is divided. It sommunicates an event or some other information which the editorial staff considers to be news. In addition the news reportage pursues to transmit to the readers observations and descriptions, and goes deeper and wider into the subject matter than the news report. In this way the news reportage is both characterized by the reportage genre and by the conventions in the newsproduction.
This thesis investigates whether the news reportage in three Norwegian newspapers differ from the ideal of the genre. By an analysis of the contents of Adresseavisen, Helgelands Blad, and VG in 2003, in addition to interviews with informants and text analysis of six specific news reportages, I find that the empirical data to a large extent is in accordance with the ideals of the genre, in the way research and scientific literature describes them. A main point is to inquire into whether the genre is under pressure. Measured in terms of the news reportage`s share of the editorial area, the answer is a loud and clear yes. But the journalists manage to balance the direction given by the genre of news reportage and that of factual journalism. So the news reportage comes forward as a definite genre, but as a rare one.
