Abstract
This thesis explores file sharing and use of digital music among a group of 336 18- and 19-year old youth in Norwegian schools. The thesis is mapping the extent of the file sharing phenomena among norwegian youth in terms of both diffusion and volume, and investigates possible coherences between downloading and different background variables such as disposable income, gender and fields of interest. The thesis is also examining the relation between music file sharing and the industry, using the claims that file sharing is having a devastating effect upon the music industry and that music file sharing is a replacement for purchasing traditionally distributed music as starting points. The relation between file sharing and the industry is investigated with two different approaches, both by a structural analysis of the market situation for traditionally distributed music between 1998-2004, and by analysis of user data gathered in the survey tested up against a theory that music file sharing in addition to a sales displacing use also has different areas of use witch not necessarily is in opposition to the interests of the music industry.
