The thesis is a study of Oslo Camera Club in the years 1921-40. It aims to give a insight of how the club discussed photography in the period. The method used is historic analysis of a body of textual data. Sources of data are the archives of the club, its periodicals, various newspaper-articles and papers issued on special occations such as anniversaries. Allthough the bulk of Oslo Camera Club members were amateur photographers, it also included professionals in its ranks. The Club was part of an international society of similar organisations. Exhibitions, competitions, photographic collections and various publications provided for an extensive international exchange of ideas within the field. However, new ideas were slowly assimilated in Oslo Camera Club. This reluctance can be related to professional background of its members wich was dominated by the new growing middle class. The values of this social group goes a long way in explaining their attitude towards the new radical photographic expression in particular.
