The topic of this thesis is the film theoretical term the gaze, in relation to feminist film. More specifically the thesis looks at the female gaze as it is presented in three films by British director Sally Potter Thriller (1979), The Gold Diggers (1983), and Orlando (1992). It discusses whether it is possible to argue an alternative structure of the gaze in film a female gaze as opposed to feminist film theory's notion of the patriarchal, male gaze. The thesis also focuses on psychoanalytic theory and its limiting explanation of the term, and then tries to find other ways of understanding the cinematic gaze. The approach is based on a theoretical discussion of the term and finally an analysis of the female gaze in each of the three films.
