Abstract
The master thesis ”Peep Show – A subjective sitcom” is a study of the series’ combination of humour, subjective film style, characters and themes. Peep Show is a series that uses subjective film style to a strong degree in order to create humour. The thesis is mainly based on a study of style of the sixth episode of season four. Through subjective shots and voiceover, the series has managed to create this subjective film style. This style gives the viewer an illusion of seeing through the characters’ eyes and to hear what the characters are thinking. Through this study, I have found out that the degree of subjectivity in Peep Show can vary strongly, from low impact, medium impact to strong impact. Also, the variation of subjectivity in the series has a big influence on how humour is constructed. The subjective film style, among other things, contributes towards strengthening the humouristic message, creates an ambivalent relation between the proper and the improper, and it also establishes an incongruence between what is being ”thought” and what is being said and done. This thesis will contribute towards a better understanding of the role of subjectivity in humour on television.
