This catalogue was written as a supplement to the exhibition «Samurai» shown at the Historical Museum in Oslo from 15 June to 31 December 2023. It includes descriptions of all the objects related to warfare: suits of armour, helmets, pole weapons, guns, swords and daggers. Objects representing the samurai as a private person from the commanding class of society are not included in the catalogue. The artifacts from the museum’s Japan collection are supplemented with objects from a Norwegian private collection. A short introduction sums up the samurai’s role throughout Japanese history, from the 11th century until the end of the 19th century, when the samurai era came to an end. It includes the themes sword testing, a suit of armour donated by the polar explorer Roald Amundsen, the custom of taking a fallen enemy’s head, ritual suicide, and two rare scrolls in the museum’s collection. The catalogue is richly illustrated.
