After the excavation of the "Søndre Felt" site was completed in 1976, plans went ahead for publishing the results. An application was submitted to the Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities (Norges almenvitenskapelige forsknngsråd) to fund the publication project, but it was unfortunately refused. A second application was successful with the result that the Council agreed to fund a five- year project, and the GAMLEBY PROJECT began in 1979. A small additional grant was made in 1984. At the beginning, an advisory board was formed, consisting of Per Sveaas Andersen, Martin Blindheim, Kari Henningsmoen, Arne B. Johansen and Hans-Emil Liden. The work has been more extensive and timeconsuming than the project leaders anticipated. Moreover, the Research Council has not financed the project in its entirety and this has meant that some members have had to work in their spare time or to fit it in with other work. Progress has therefore been complicated and this has resulted in delays. The various contributors to the present volume had all submitted their final manuscripts in 1986, while chapters D and E were already more or less complete in 1981. We wish to express our gratitude to the co-authors of this volume for their excellent collaboration and co-operation. Our thanks go also to the project's advisory board for valuable discussions and advice, particularly in the initial stages of the project and in the early years. We are very grateful for the collaboration with the "Environmental Archaeology Unit" (EAU) in York and in particular to the the Management Committee of the "EAU" for allowing Kenward and Jones to work on the material from Oslo. We should also like to express our thanks to Ove Arbo Høeg for his valuable comments to Chapter 8 and to Christian Diaz who drew the illustrations to chapters A and 8, to Clifford D. Long for translating chapters A and F from Norwegian, and to Christopher Ennals for linguistic comments and corrections. We should also like to thank our publishers for their pleasant collaboration in the preparation of this volume. Petter B. Molaug & Erik Schia Project Leadersen_US
