Nyliberalisme på norsk - Trygve J.B. Hoff og hans politiske linje som redaktør og forfatter fra 1935 til 1965

Abstract

Trygve J.B. Hoff var en av få selverklærte nyliberalister allerede på 1930-tallet. Han kan sies å være en nyliberal ideolog som sto i ytterkanten av den norske politiske diskursen. Allikevel var næringslivsmagasinet Farmand hvor Hoff var redaktør en viktig og til dels innflytelsesrik stemme i den norske offentligheten. Denne oppgaven er en studie av den politiske linjen som Hoff fremmet og la til rette for i Farmand gjennom sin redaktørrolle fra 1935- til 1960-tallet, og i sine bøker. Dette er gjort gjennom en kontekstualiserende tilnærming til tekstene. Oppgaven fokuserer på et sett av spørsmål, nærmere bestemt forholdet mellom økonomisk og politisk frihet hos Hoff, hans syn på Arbeiderpartiet og på partiene på den borgerlige siden av politikken. Videre drøftes også Hoffs syn på forholdet mellom liberalisme og konservatisme, mellom økonomisk og kulturell liberalisme, og mellom liberalisme og demokrati.

Trygve J.B. Hoff was one of the few self-proclaimed neoliberals as early as the 1930s. He can be said to be a neoliberal ideologue who stood on the fringes of Norwegian political discourse. Nevertheless, the business magazine Farmand, where Hoff was editor, was an important and partly influential voice in the Norwegian public. This thesis is a study of the political line that Hoff promoted and facilitated in Farmand through his editorial role from the 1935s to the 1960s, and in his books. This is done through a contextualizing approach to the texts. The thesis focuses on a set of questions, more specifically the relationship between economic and political freedom for Hoff, his views on the Arbeiderpartiet (Labour Party) and on the parties on the conservative side of politics. Furthermore, Hoff's views on the relationship between liberalism and conservatism, between economic and cultural liberalism, and between liberalism and democracy are also discussed.
