dc.description.abstract | This thesis argues that gender norms and gender roles affected ancient gynaecology and obstetrics. It argues that gender relations created preferences of medical solutions and moral limitations to what solutions were desirable and attainable for women. Starting with puberty the thesis approaches the topic in depth through pregnancy and giving birth, as well as the role of the midwife. The thesis employs gender theory. Further, it examines both archaeological material and ancient texts as premise to discuss the relevance of gender in ancient medicine. This will result in a broader reconstruction, focused on the women’s role in her own sexual and reproductive health. A central angle to feminist history and gender studies, important to further explore | eng |
