Forhandlingar, preferansar og nyttefunksjonar

Abstract

Temaet for denne oppgåva er forhandlingar frå eit spillteoretisk perspektiv. Vi tar utgangspunkt i artikkelen «The Bargaining Problem» av John Nash og forsøker å legge fram Nash si løysing på ein forståeleg måte. Her ser vi nærare på matematikken bak teorien, og presenterer eigne bevis av resultat som kanskje ikkje er heilt opplagde. Vi ser på forhandlingar om gode mellom to partar, og kjem fram til at gitt visse vilkår, finn vi den optimale fordelinga av gode ved å maksimere produktet av nytten som dei to partane får av goda. Deretter anvender vi dette ved å rekne på eit konkret eksempel, før vi avsluttar oppgåva med å studere samanhengen mellom preferanserelasjonar og nyttefunksjonar. Her viser det seg at gitt visse krav, er vi sikra at det eksisterer skalérbare nyttefunksjonar som representerer preferansane våre.

The theme of this thesis is bargaining from a game theoretical point of view. We look at John Nash’s article “The Bargaining Problem” and try to present Nash’s solution in an understandable way. We take a closer look at the mathematics behind the theory and present our own proofs of results that may not be entirely obvious. We look at a bargaining situation between two parties and come to the conclusion that given certain conditions, we find the optimal distribution of goods by maximizing the product of the utilities that the two parties gain from the bargaining. Then we apply this in an example, and finish the thesis by studying the connection between preference relations and utility functions. It turns out that given certain requirements, we are sure that there exist scalable utility functions that represent our preferences.
