Bruk av multimedia Internett-tjenester over multihopp OLSR ad hoc-nettverk

Abstract

Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) are stand alone, wireless networks where nodes can move arbitrary in the network topology and where multi-hop is feasible. MANET has a big potential but the challenges in realizing that potential are many and complicated. The emphasis of research in MANET has been on routing. A new trend within the research field is to connect MANET with the Internet. The authors have an ambition with this thesis to test the usability of Internet services in MANET with the routing protocol Optimized Link State Routing Protocol (OLSR). Our tests have been conducted in a realistic office landscape with varied configurations on the user equipment. We have tested services like Voice over IP (VoIP), e-mail, web browsing and web TV, with emphasis on VoIP.

Our test scenarios show that OLSR function fine over a few hops but with little satisfaction when the number of hops increase. This reflects in the quality of VoIP, which is low when the numbers of hops are three, or above. There could be many reasons for this: Among other things the infrastructure of the network, environments, interference, building materials and other forms of noise. The compositions of factors are complex and because of that one cannot just name one reason for the services not to function optimal.
