Abstract
This is a summary of the cand. scient. thesis "En heterogen implementasjon av generiske pakker og ekspanderbare klasser i Java" (in English: "A heterogeneous implementation of generic packages and expandable classes in Java".)
The thesis is based on the generic mechanism generic packages and expandable classes, as described by Stein Krogdahl in his research papers. The paper describes the practical implementation of the compiler C0FFEE, which is based on the Java compiler Espresso, and which is written to support an extension of the standard Java language.
This extension of Java is entitled JC0FFEE. JC0FFEE supports a subset of the mechanism described by Krogdahl, and the thesis also discusses further work needed in order to support the entire language specified by Krogdahl. The implementation of the generic mechanism in C0FFEE is written to be heterogeneous.
The thesis also discusses generic mechanisms in general, and it describes several suggestions to the introduction of such mechanisms in the Java programming language.
