Abstract

Mobile phones has in the last couple of years increased its popularity in our society. Through mobile technology you are no longer tied to an indoor setting and the mobile phone has become an important device for communication and finding information on the go. However, they have their limitations when it comes to outdoor use, which is a context that is unpredictable, dynamic and uncontrollable.
This thesis describes the terms context and context awareness in relation to mobile technology, and how a smartphone is suitable as a tool when hiking in the mountains. What is also questioned is our ability to regulate our availability, and the consequences of what constant availability could bring. To enjoy a good outdoor experience or a quiet moment in our everyday life, one will have to choose actively not to use technology that causes interruptions. Smartphone can be used as a tool on a hiking trip. The focus of this thesis is partly to identify how one can design a mobile application to maximize the utility of a smartphone on a hiking trip. To support the findings in this thesis, the data collected are based on scientific methods. These methods includes interview, survey, focus group and group-based expert walkthrough.
One of the findings in this thesis, shows that the relationship between the users context and context aware technology play an important role when it comes to successful design. The mobile phone can be used as a tool in different ways for each stage of a hiking trip. It is therefore important that the mobile phone can offer functionality designed to be used before, during and after a hiking trip. The thesis summarizes several automatic and manual methods to regulate the users availability through the mobile phone, to decrease the chances of unnecessary interruptions during the day. Finally, results are presented from the development process of a mobile application, that may be used to discover hiking routes. The mobile application is designed according to mobile design principles and usability goals. By designing good applications, the smart phone can be experienced as a invisible helping tool on a hiking trip. At the same time, the user can focus on the environment and the experience of being outdoors, instead of focusing on the application itself.
