Retorno al norte lejano: Nostalgia e introspección femenina en dos cuentos hispanoamericanos (Ulrica de Jorge Luis Borges, y Esbjerg, en la costa de Juan Carlos Onetti)

Abstract

En esta tesis se analiza la representación del norte en la literatura hispánica y el discurso boreal a través de los dos cuentos: Ulrica (1975) de Jorge Luis Borges y Esbjerg, en la costa (1946) de Juan Carlos Onetti. Se exploran las características específicas atribuidas a los personajes femeninos nórdicos en estos dos cuentos y cómo estas mujeres nórdicas representan el espacio y el sentimiento nórdico como un lugar sentimental y no solo geográfico. Al combinar conceptos del campo de la imagología y el borealismo se presta una especial atención a las representaciones imagotípicas de la mujer del siglo XX en cuanto a su aspecto físico, progresismo y representación en la literatura nórdica antigua. A través de la creación de los cuentos, los autores del cono sur intentan poseer y habitar el norte, algo que solo se muestra posible mediante la creación de sus narradores ficticios del sur y su encuentro con el norte lejano a través del anhelo de las mujeres nórdicas: y finalmente serán invitados a compartir con las mujeres nórdicas todo un viaje introspectivo y nostálgico de regreso al norte. El análisis del primer cuento, Ulrica, explora a través de la división en tres partes el efecto del encuentro entre los personajes Ulrica del norte y Javier del sur, y cómo la representante nórdica femenina, Ulrica, a través de sus rasgos nórdicos funciona como un imagotipo de la valkiria Brynhild de la saga Volsunga y así sirve de puente entre el mundo antiguo y el moderno. A través del discurso boreal, el personaje Ulrica, creado por un autor del sur, establece un pasaje al norte para los otros personajes y para los lectores del cuento mediante un ejercicio de nostalgia e introspección que se presenta como único acceso que queda para regresar otra vez a un norte reimaginado. El análisis del segundo cuento, Esbjerg, en la costa, también dividido en tres partes, explora el rol de la nostalgia nórdica en la relación de Kirsten como mujer progresista, que contrasta con la típica mujer sureña; a través de un ejercicio introspectivo de nostalgia, Kirsten se convierte en un puente hacia la visión que de su norte natal recupera para su pareja Montes e incluso para los lectores. Se explora cómo la representación de la mujer nórdica, Kirsten, a través de los ojos de un narrador poco confiable y cínico, establece ciertos imagotipos nórdicos y el rol que tiene el norte idealizado en los personajes y lectores al contrastarlo con el sur.

This thesis analyzes the representation of the North in Hispanic literature and the boreal discourse through the two stories: Ulrica (1975) by Jorge Luis Borges and Esbjerg, en la costa (1946) by Juan Carlos Onetti. This thesis also explores the specific characteristics attributed to the Nordic female characters in these two stories and how these Nordic women represent Nordic space and feeling as a sentimental place and not just a geographical one. By combining concepts from the field of imagology and borealism, special attention is paid to imagotypical representations of 20th-century women in terms of their physical appearance, progressivism, and representation in Old Norse literature. Through the creation of the stories, the authors of the Southern Cone attempt to possess and inhabit the North, something that is only shown to be possible through the creation of fictional Southern narrators and the retelling of their encounters with these Nordic women. In this way, they are invited to share the North through the womens’ feelings of nostalgia and introspection. The analysis of the first story, Ulrica, is divided into three parts which explore the effect of the encounter between the characters Ulrica from the North and Javier from the South but also how the female Nordic representative, through her Nordic features, functions as an imagotype of the Valkyrie Brynhild from the saga and thus serves as a bridge between the ancient and modern world. Through the boreal discourse, the character Ulrica, created by the author from the South, establishes a passage into the North for the characters and the readers through an exercise of nostalgia and introspection that is presented as the only way left for them to return again to an imagined North. The analysis of the second story, Esbjerg, en la costa, also divided into three parts, explores the role of Nordic nostalgia and its connection to Kirsten's progressiveness as a woman, which contrasts with the typical Southern woman; Through an introspective exercise of nostalgia, Kirsten becomes a bridge to her memory of her native North for her partner Montes and for the readers, as well. It explores how, through the eyes of an unreliable and cynical narrator, the representation of the Nordic woman creates certain Nordic imagotypes, and also investigates the role that the idealized North has for the characters and readers through by contrasting it with the South.
