Vår tids apokalypse

Abstract

I kjølvannet av at Greta Thunberg holdt sin tale «Our house is on fire» under World Economic Forum (WEF) i Davos i januar 2019, ser vi i dag en stor oppslutning rundt klima- og miljøproblematikk verden over. Denne oppslutningen kan vi finne blant både politikere og forskere som beskriver en trussel om klimaets undergang. I denne oppgaven undersøker jeg hvordan Greta Thunberg bruker retorikk for å samle en gruppe mennesker om å samarbeide for å nå det samme målet. Oppgavens problemstilling er: Hvordan konstituerer Greta Thunberg sine tilhengere ved å bruke apokalyptisk retorikk? For å undersøke denne problemstillingen har jeg gjort en retorisk analyse, nærmere bestemt ideologisk kritikk, av tre av Greta Thunberg sine taler. Disse talene er «Our house is on fire» (januar), «The Easiest solution is right in front of you» (mai) og «The World is waking up» (september). Basert på analysen av disse talene, tegner det seg et bilde av at Thunberg retorisk skaper en gruppe ved å tilby en verdensforståelse som blant annet viser trekk av apokalyptisk retorikk. Avslutningsvis presenterer jeg flere trekk fra apokalyptiske retorikk som Thunberg bruker i sine taler og hvordan disse er med på å konstituere tilhengerne.

Greta Thunberg gave her speech «Our house is on fire» during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos in January 2019. In the aftermath, the cause of climate and environmental issues gathered worldwide attention. Support can be found among both politicians and researchers who also choose to use words like “ecological breakdown” to achieve similar rhetorical effects. In this thesis I want to take a closer look at how Greta Thunberg makes use of such rhetorical language in order to unite, impassion and investigate how Greta Thunberg uses rhetoric to gather a group of people to achieve the same goal. Issue of the thesis: How does Greta Thunberg constitute her followers using apocalyptic rhetoric? To examine this issue, I have done a rhetorical analysis, more specifically an ideological critique, of three of Greta Thunberg´s speeches. These speeches are «Ours house is on fire» (January), «The Easiest solution is right in front of you» (May) and «The World is waking up» (September). Based on the analysis of these speeches, a emerges that Thunberg rhetorically creates a group by offering a worldview that, among other things, shows features of apocalyptic rhetoric. In conclusion, I present several features from apocalyptic rhetoric that Thunberg uses in her speeches and how these helps to constitute her followers.
