This thesis examines the impact of terminology usage on the study of past diseases, using leprosy as case example. The archaeological and historical contributions to the scholarship on medieval leprosy are examined, and a standardized terminology is proposed that improves the clarity of the academic discussion surrounding this disease. The implications of this thesis also highlight and challenge the continuing use of pejorative terminology within both the academic and popular discourses of leprosy.eng
