dc.description.abstract | Ny forskning har vist at omega-3 fettsyrer, som eikosapentaensyre (EPA), dokosapentaensyre (DPA), og dokosaheksaensyre (DHA), er viktige forløpere til hydroksylerte endogene forbindelser, som dannes i mennesker og dyr. En rekke biologiske studier har vist at disse forbindelsene har potente effekter mot inflammasjonsprosesser. Vedvarende og ukontrollert inflammasjon er relatert til en rekke sykdomstilstander, som astma, diabetes og kronisk smerte. Det er derfor en stor interesse for biologisk evaluering av disse hydroksylerte omega-3 forbindelsene, samt analoger mot de nevnte inflammasjonstilstander. En av utfordringene er at disse forbindelsene dannes i svært små mengder når inflammasjon forekommer, slik at syntetisk organisk kjemi er nødvendig for å sikre nok materiale til å bestemme eksakt struktur men også for å utføre biologiske studier. I dette doktorgradsarbeidet har tre ulike hydroksylerte forbindelser og to analoger blitt fremstilt ved hjelp av kjemisk organisk syntese. Biologiske studier i samarbeid med gruppen til Professor Jesmond Dalli ved Queen Mary University, London og gruppen til Professor Ru-Rong Ji ved Duke University, North Carolina, har gitt ny og nyttig informasjon som kan anvendes i utvikling av mulig nye legemiddelkandidater i behandling av inflammatoriske sykdommer og smerte med færre bivirkninger. | en_US |
