Med forord av

Abstract

Dette er en masteroppgave om en spesifikk type forord. Forord som inngår i det litteraturteoretikeren Gérard Genette ville kalt allografiske forord, forord som er skrevet av en annen enn forfatteren selv, og i min studie: en annen forfatter i en annen tid. Denne typen forord har ifølge Genette en viktig, anbefalende funksjon, og med utgangspunkt i Charles Bukowskis forord til Ask the Dust av John Fante, Lydia Davis’ forord til A Manual for Cleaning Women av Lucia Berlin, Maria Navarro Skarangers forord til Kveld i paradis (originaltittel: Evening in Paradise) av Lucia Berlin og Per Pettersons forord til Heftige bånd (originaltittel: Fierce Attachments) av Vivian Gornick undersøker jeg hvordan den anbefalende funksjonen kommer til uttrykk i forord av samtidsforfattere. Forordsskribentene i utvalget mitt har alle en personlig tilnærming til verkene de innleder, og jeg drøfter den ukritiske begeistringen for forfatterskapet, da den fremstår som en ren kjærlighetserklæring fra én forfatter til en annen. Videre undersøker jeg verdien denne kjærlighetserklæringen kan tilføre, men jeg ser også på hvordan den kan frarøve verket verdi. Ved hjelp av Pierre Bourdieus feltteori, der litteraturfeltet styres av en omvendt økonomisk logikk, finner jeg en forskyvning av roller mellom forlag og forordsskribent for at den anbefalende funksjonen skal tre i kraft. Mot slutten av analysen bruker jeg perspektiver fra Harold Blooms Vestens litterære kanon for å belyse hvordan forordsskribenten gjennom sin personlige og begeistrede tilnærming aktualiserer bøkene. Ettersom nyutgivelsene førte til at forfatterskapene fikk en ny vår, er det grunn til å anta at samtidsforfatternes forord har hatt en betydning. For å få en pekepinn på hvorvidt dette stemmer, og for å se om forordene i det hele tatt leses, kartlegger jeg hvordan forordene nevnes i mottakelsen av bøkene.

The topic of this master’s thesis is a specific type of preface. It is a preface that literary theorist Gérard Genette would have called an allographic preface — one that is written by someone other than the author, or in the case of this study, one that is both written by a different author and at a different time than the work it accompanies. According to Genette, this type of preface has an important recommendatory function. I examine how this function is expressed in prefaces written by contemporary authors: Charles Bukowski's preface to Ask the Dust by John Fante; Lydia Davis' preface to A Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin; Maria Navarro Skaranger's preface to Kveld i paradis (original title: Evening in Paradise) by Lucia Berlin; and Per Petterson's preface to Heftige bånd (original title: Fierce Attachments) by Vivian Gornick. The preface authors in my selection all take a personal approach to the works they introduce, and I discuss their uncritical enthusiasm for the works which appear as pure declarations of love from one author to another. Furthermore, I examine the value that this declaration of love can add, but I also explore how it can detract value from the work. Using Pierre Bourdieu's field theory, where the field of literature is governed by a reverse economic logic, I find a shift of roles between publisher and preface writer in order for the recommendatory function to take effect. Towards the end of the analysis, I use quotations from Harold Bloom’s The Western Canon to illustrate how the preface writer, through their personal and enthusiastic approach, brings the works into the present. Given that the new editions led to renewed popularity for these works, there is reason to believe that the contemporary authors’ prefaces have had an impact. In order to determine to what extent this holds true, and to check if the prefaces are being read at all, I draft if and how the prefaces are mentioned in reviews of the selected works.
