Abstract
This is a master dissertation for a remedial conservation treatment of an 18th-century portrait; Visual investigation and the use of several analytical methods were applied in order to answer the research questions, the objective being to understand the mechanisms that have led to the paintings current, degraded condition. The information collected combined with selected literature helped to gain a better understanding of possible treatment options and applicable techniques, such as cleaning and consolidation. The remedial treatment was recognized as most important in order to save the painting from continued degradation, stabilize it and restore its structural integrity. In addition, aesthetical features such as fillings and inpainting helped restore the paintings aesthetical values and thereby enabling the artworks intended function of exhibition at the Folkenborg Museum.
