Om hvordan podkasten finner sin form: en analyse av hvordan podkastmediet er tatt imot, og institusjonaliseres, brukes og beskrives i 2019.

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven undersøker hvordan studenter bruker podkast og hvordan profesjonelle aktører jobber med podkastmediet. Oppgaven undersøker også hvordan mediet er blitt tatt imot i store norske medier og holdningene studenter og aktører har til podkast. Podkastmediet er fortsatt inne i en tidlig fase hvor det er i ferd med å finne sin form som medium. Når et medium finner sin form, har det blitt institusjonalisert og gått fra det løse og mindre konkrete til det faste og etablerte. Både skaperne og brukerne av podkast er med på å forme mediet. Gjennom 16 dybdeintervjuer med 10 studenter og seks podkast-aktører, analyser oppgaven hvordan podkastmediet blir institusjonalisert. Analysen bygger på teoretiske perspektiver på hvordan medier blir mottatt og finner sin form. Oppgaven argumenter for at podkastmediet har funnet finansieringskilder, men mangler etablerte sjangre og konkrete retningslinjer for hvordan forholde seg til presseetiske hensyn. Når det gjelder bruk, argumenteres det for at lytting på podkast er en primæraktivitet som ofte kombineres med en sekundæraktivitet, gjerne å reise, rydde eller lage mat. Studenter bruker podkast med en rekke ulike hensikter, særlig for å bli underholdt, reflektere over idéer og for å lære om ulike emner. Podkast ble mottatt med begeistring, men flere har kritisert mediet for å være en plattform hvor en sier det en vil, uten hensyn. Denne oppgaven finner det sannsynlig at mer kritikk vil rettes mot podkast i fremtiden, særlig mot de aspektene ved podkast som begeistrer folk i dag.   

This thesis for the master`s degree examines how students are using podcasts in their daily life and how professional podcast producers approach podcasting. The thesis also analyses how Norwegian news media have received the new medium and students` and professionals` attitudes towards podcasting. The podcast phenomenon is still finding its relevant place and proper form in an already crowded media scene. In the past, as a medium has found its form, it has also been institutionalised; changing from a multifaceted and diverse expression to a more streamlined industry, with established traditions, organisations and ethical standards. Both the producers and users of podcasts contribute to the shaping of the medium. Through 16 in-depth interviews with 10 students and six podcast professionals, this paper explore how the podcast medium is being institutionalised. The analysis builds on theoretical perspectives on how new media are received and find their form. The present findings indicate that the podcast media has found financial support, but lacks established genres and concrete standards on how to approach ethical questions regarding privacy. Findings of the study suggest that students listen to a podcast while doing another activity. While students may listen to podcasts as they travel or make dinner, they still regard listening to podcast as an activity that demands concentration. Based on the results, it seems that podcast is primarily used to gain new knowledge, be entertained or to explore views on today's society. Norwegian news media were fascinated with the new medium, yet different podcasts have been criticized for bearing little or no regards to people’s privacy. This thesis argues that more criticism is in line for the new medium in the future, especially towards elements of podcasting that users and creators embrace today.
