Abstract
The main purpose of this master thesis is to examine how non-standard analysis can form an alternative to the traditional teaching of calculus, in high school and pre-university level. In order to discuss the validity of the non-standard analysis, this thesis will aim to give a satisfactory introduction to non-standard analysis so that the reader is able to follow the didactic. As an introduction there will first be given examples, aiming to form an intuitive understanding of infinitesimals, and second the historical development of non-standard analysis. Then, a construction of hyperreal numbers will be presented and the algebraic structure on the set of hyperreals. The construction will be used to extend the concepts of sets, sequences, and functions from classical calculus, which leads to a presentation of non-standard characterizations of the basic concepts of limits, convergence, continuity, the derivative and integral. These characterizations provide the tools to give non-standard proofs of basic theorems and results, which are relevant for calculus in high school and at pre-university level. In addition to the task of providing rigorous mathematical proofs and arguments with a non-standard approach. This thesis will emphasize on explaining the reasoning and underlying problems, which have led mathematicians to the definitions that formed the calculus which we are familiar with today. Based on the introduction to non-standard analysis, the task will be to analyze textbooks using the non-standard approach to calculus and further discuss the pros and cons of the respective approaches. Ultimately, this thesis will give a theory-driven discussion of the didactic implications towards a non-standard approach. The nonstandard approach will be assessed both from a teaching perspective and as an alternative to the traditional analysis.
