Helse, medier og kilder: En analyse av «Ventelistenyhetsavsløringen» og «Psykiatrinyhetsavsløringen» i norske nyhetsmedier

Abstract

Det kan være vanskelig å få tilgang til informasjon om det offentlige helsevesenet, for mye av informasjonen er taushetsbelagt. Journalistene i avisene Verdens Gang og Dagens Medisin fikk ved hjelp av ulike kilder tilgang til informasjon om sårbare pasienter. Når kilder deler informasjon med journalister får de innflytelse på problemer i helsevesenet fordi de bidrar til å forme og vinkle nyhetssaken. Denne studien vil belyse utviklingen av nyhetssakene psykiatrinyhetsavsløringen og ventelistenyhetsavsløringen i samspillet mellom kilder og medier. Studien undersøker også de involverte profesjoners rolle og forståelse av egen rolle i nyhetsavsløringene. Gjennom kvalitative intervju med 23 informanter, deriblant helseledere, politikere og forskere, viser studiens funn at det er ulike forståelser av nyhetssakene. De ulike forståelsene av nyhetssakene kan ha en sammenheng med informantens yrkesprofesjon. Både psykiatrinyhetsavsløringen og ventelistenyhetsavsløringen utviklet seg over tid grunnet journalistenes arbeid, men også grunnet de ulike profesjonenes deltakelse. Enkelte informanter deltok strategisk i nyhetssakene for å få mer oppmerksomhet rundt et helseproblem, og andre informanter deltok kun fordi de ble spurt av journalistene om å delta. Psykiatrinyhetsavsløringen startet med en pasienthistorie, og ventelistenyhetsavsløringen startet med ekspertkilder. Nyhetssakene hadde ulike veier til politisk innflytelse, og begge endte til slutt på bordet til helse- og omsorgsminister Bent Høie.

It is generally difficult to find secret information about public healthcare because much of the information is confidential. The journalists in the newspaper Verdens Gang and Dagens Medisin gained access to information about vulnerable patients by using various sources. When sources share information with journalists they have an influence on healthcare problems because they help shape and angle the news story. This study will elucidate the characteristics of the news development of psychiatry and the waiting list that the journalists were responsible for. The study also examines the role and understanding of the professionals involved in the news release on psychiatry and waiting lists. Through a qualitative interview with 23 informants, including healthcare practitioners, politicians, researchers, the findings of this study show that there are different opinions and understandings about the news stories. The different understanding of the news can be related to the informant’s professional profession. Both the psychiatry and the waiting list evolved over time due to journalists’ work, but also due to the different professions’ participation. Some informants participated strategically in the news cases to get more attention about health and other informants only participated because they were asked by the journalists to participate. The psychiatry story started with a patient history and the waiting list started with expert sources. The news cases had different ways to political influence and both news cases ended in the workplace of the Minister of Health and Care Bent Høie.
