Volcanoes are both threat to life and source of economic wealth, however little is known about the processes in the Earth’s crust leading to their origin. Laboratory models are used to shed light on the otherwise inaccessible interactions of hot, molten rock (magma) and its surrounding rocks in the underground. In the future, the knowledge gained from using these models may help forecasting potential risks and improve exploration for resources and geothermal energy.
