Abstract
The pro-recovery movement has emerged as a counterweight to the “pro-ana” movement on social media, known for encouraging eating disorders and extreme dieting. The pro-recovery movement is particularly prevalent on Instagram, where participants often share pictures and verbal texts describing their experience recovering from an eating disorder. There are probably thousands of pro-recovery profiles on Instagram. Some of them are very popular with a lot of followers, earning the individuals behind them a status of “micro celebrity”. This dissertation is a textual-rhetorical analysis of 33 texts from five of the most popular pro-recovery profiles on Instagram, with the purpose of describing what is being communicated and how meaning is created and negotiated in these texts. My findings show that much of the content in these texts concerns information about negative aspects and characteristics of eating disorders, what it means to be in recovery, and the benefits of recovering from eating disorders. This information is primarily used as a basis for encouraging and motivating the followers of wanting to recover from their eating disorders. The texts are described as motivational speeches, where the political aspect is to inform readers about the cultural and social influences they are exposed to, and convince them that it is counterproductive to maintain a body-focus in recovery. An important and interesting finding in this paper is that there appears to be a distinction between the pro-recovery movement on the Internet and clinical treatment environments in the physical world, meaning that they do not resemble one another. In a survey regarding pro-recovery profiles on Instagram, distributed in different social media, 96 % of the 693 respondents say they follow pro-recovery profiles on Instagram. And of the 65 % who reported they are being clinically treated, only 13 % report that the pro-recovery movement in social media is a topic in their treatment. I hope this analysis can help clinical treatment environments, both for eating disorders and other disorders, to become more aware of social media’s role in the lives of many people, and to a larger extent actualize their patients’ participation in and interpretation of what they see and read on the Internet, especially on social media, in the treatment. I also hope that the producers of pro-recovery content in social media will benefit from my findings and conclusions, and that it will make them reflect on their own roles as role models, and work to avoid affecting their readers adversely through the content that they post.
