Atmosfæriske lys: En diskusjon om lysets potensiale til å generere atmosfære og skape velvære i offentlige rom

Abstract

I denne oppgaven gjøres det rede for lyset og atmosfærens fenomenologi med en hensikt om å utforske hvilke muligheter som ligger i bruken av lys for å forbedre det psykosomatiske velvære i offentlige rom. Benyttelsen av estetiske elementer, som lyseffekter og lyskunst, analyseres ettersom de er særlig relevante i denne diskusjonen. Offentlige oppholdsrom, og især stasjoner, i store byer som Oslo besøkes hver dag av et mangfold med mennesker som ferdes gjennom rommene i varierende tempo. De fleste har som regel en klar oppfatning av hvilke rom som er behagelige eller ubehagelige å oppholde seg i. Lysets roller utforskes i relasjon til romforståelse og -følelse, med utgangspunkt i de fenomenologiske teorien til den finske arkitekten og tidligere rektor ved Helsinki Teknologiske Universitet, Juhani Pallasmaa, og den tyske filosofen og fungerende direktør for Instituttet for praktisk filosofi i Darmstadt, Gernot Böhme. T-banestasjonene Nydalen T og Sinsen T er oppgavens hovedkasus. Lysbruken på disse stasjonene er ulike på mange måter, og dette dreier seg hovedsakelig om at førstnevnte er en undergrunnsstajson, mens den andre er en utestasjon. Nydalen T belyses kun med elektrisk lys, mens lyskilden på Sinsen T er hovedsakelig det naturlige lyset. Stasjonenes primære lyskilder tas i tillegg opp i utsmykningene. Det er relevant å beskrive de distinkte kvalitetene i naturlig lys og elektrisk lys ettersom denne distinksjonen blir oversett eller tatt for gitt i de fleste estetiske teorier. Et utvalg av lyskunstverk og andre stasjoner inkluderes for å eksemplifisere lysets estetiske og perseptuelle kvaliteter.

In this thesis the phenomenology of light and atmospheres is discussed for the purpose of investigating how light can be used to improve the psychosomatic well-being in public spaces. Aesthetic elements such as light effects and light-art are analyzed since they are highly relevant in a discussion of how to create spaces that are perceptually appealing. Public spaces, and especially stations, in large cities like Oslo are visited daily by a vast amount of people travelling through the spaces in varying paces. Most of these people have a clear - and often corresponding - sense of the degree in which a space is experienced as pleasant or unpleasant. The different roles of lighting are explored in relation to spatial perception and feeling, with the phenomenological theory of Finnish architect and former principal of Helsinki University of Technology, Juhani Pallasmaa, and German philosopher and director of the Institute for Practical Philosophy in Darmstadt, Gernot Böhme. Two subway stations in Oslo are presented as the main cases of the thesis: Nydalen T and Sinsen T. The utilization of light in these spaces differ in many respects, mainly concerning that the former is an underground station whilst the latter is an outdoor-station. At Nydalen T electric light is the only light source, whereas Sinsen T is mainly lit by the natural light in its surroundings. In addition, the stations’ public art pieces make use of their primary light sources. It is important to look into the distinct qualities of these two sources of light, especially since aesthetic theories of light often overlook it or take the distinction between them for granted. Artworks from a selection of Light and Space artist as well as other subway stations are also included to exemplify different perceptual and aesthetic qualities of light.
