Barn og nyheter, norske barns nyhetsleting og -forståelse

Abstract

Barn i Norge har tilbud om et bredt utvalg av nyheter på alle tenkelige plattformer. Hver eneste dag hele uken publiseres spesialproduserte barnenyheter på Internett, Snapchat, og Instagram. Det finnes junioraviser både på nett og mobil, og i tillegg får norske barn fem nye TV-nyhetssendinger i uken. Som attpåtil er tilgjengelig on-demand når de vil! Denne masteroppgaven undersøker om de benytter seg av tilbudet. Ved å forske på norske 11-åringers forhold til nyheter belyser den også hva slags roller de tar i samfunnet. Problemstillingen søker svar på hvordan norske barn finner, leser og forstår nyheter som lages for dem. Mine funn viser at barna er veldig opptatt av å følge med i samfunnet. Deres hovedmotivasjon for å aktivt lete etter nyheter er å få vite hva som skjer. De vil vite hva som skjer i verden, i Norge, og fder de bor. De vil vite hva som skjer i konfliktområder som Syria, hva som skjer med Marcus og Martinus og hva som skjer hvis Trump blir president i USA. Den store nyhetsinteressen gjør at de har utviklet kompetanse på nyhetsleting. Men de leser ikke bare barnenyheter, de leser oppdateringene der de finner dem først, og det er ofte på nyhetsnettsteder for voksne, som VG.no. Der hender det finner ting som gjør dem redde eller bekymret, og da søker de støtte fra de voksne hjemme. De liker spennende overskrifter og bilder, og hvis språket i tillegg er klart og tydelig forstår de sakene best.

Abstract The Children of Norway are offered a wide range of news, on all conceivable platforms. Child appropriate news content are published all day, seven days a week. Norwegian kids can get age cotumized news online, on Snapchat and from Instagram. There are junior newspapers both online and on paper. Finally Norwegian children get five fresh news broadcasts on TV every week. Oh, and they are available on-demand online whenever they want! This thesis examines whether they make use of the offer. By examining the relationship between Norwegian 11-year-olds and the news the thesis highlights what kind of roles the children plays in society. Are they citizens, with the rights and responsibilities that entails? Or are they citizens in the making, in need of protection and guidance? The investigation seeks answers on how Norwegian children search for, read and understand the news. In particular it focuses on the news who targets the young audience. My findings show that children are very keen to keep up with society. Their main motivation for news searching are to find out “what happens”. They want to know what happens in the world, in Norway, and in their own neighbourhood. They want to know what happens in the conflict areas such as Syria, what happens to Norwegian child stars Marcus and Martinus, and what happens if Trump becomes president of the United States. Their great interest in the news have made them experts on searching for informationon the web. The do not limit themselves to childrens news, they will read the first stories they come across in their search. Most of the time their search leads them to grown-up news sites like VG.no. The grown-up-stories will sometimes make them worried or fearful, which will make them seek supports from the adults at home. They enjoy exciting headlines and pictures. Uncomplicated storytelling and a language they can relate to, makes for the best understanding of a news story.
