Krigersamfunn vs bondesamfunn. En sammenlikning av Orknøyene og Færøyene 870-1195.

Abstract

Denne oppgaven er en sammenlikning av de to øysamfunnene Orknøyene og Færøyene i perioden 870-1195. Oppgaven tar utgangspunkt i tre ulike sagaer: Orkneyinga saga, Færeyinga saga og Heimskringla. Gjennom analysene av de tre sagaene får man et innblikk i den politiske kulturen som møter oss på Orknøyene og Færøyene. Hovedteorien gjennom oppgaven er at Orknøyene er et krigersamfunn og Færøyene et bondesamfunn. Oppgaven tar for seg likheter og forskjeller i den politiske kulturen vi ser gjennom analyser av ideologien, herskerbeskrivelsene, vennskapsrelasjoner, slektskap og bruken av oppfostring som man finner i sagaene. Gjennom disse analysene vil man kunne finne tendenser som viser hvilken samfunnsmodell de to øysamfunnene hører til under. Oppgaven setter spørsmåltegn ved bruken av vennskapstermen for alle områder knyttet til Norge i tidlig middelalder.

This thesis provides a comparison of the two island communities Orkney and the Faroe Islands during the period 870-1195. It is based on the analysis of three sagas: Orkneyinga saga, Færeyinga saga and Heimskringla. Through the analysis we get an image of the political culture that exist on Orkney and the Faroe Islands. The main theory is that Orkney is a warrior society while the Faroe Islands is a peasant society. The thesis looks at similarities and differences in the political culture we can find through analysing ideology, ruler descriptions, friendship, kinship and rearing found in the sagas. Through this investigation we can find tendencies that reveals which society model the different Island communities belong to. The thesis questions the use of the friendship term on all areas connected to Norway during the Middle Ages.
