Background and aims: The Lightning Process (LP) is a mental training program developed by Phil Parker. It has gained most of attention regarding its use as a training course for CFS/ME patients. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely used form of psychotherapy, including in the public health service. The aim of this study was to compare the different elements of LP to elements known in CBT. In doing so, the hope is to explain LP, which is generally not well known by health professionals or the public in general, to people familiar with CBT. Methods: This study is mainly a literature study in its form. The work of finding relevant literature took place between autumn 2013 up until summer 2015. Two books on LP and three books on CBT ended up being the main basis for the comparison, on the basis of subjective judgments regarding the usefulness as tools for comparison. In addition to this several studies on topics related to the issues arising from the comparison were reviewed, some of which were included. I have also been attending a three-day LP course as an observer and made my own reflections and thoughts on the basis of that experience. Results: Several of the elements in LP, both the specific techniques and the ideas that lie behind them, were recognizable compared to the underlying thoughts and methods found in CBT literature. Elements like reviewing ones thoughts, the importance of reality filters, expectations, and beliefs, and making choices and visualization are examples of similarities that were considered important. Conclusion: In this study the aim was to use CBT as a tool for understanding LP. The similarities are present to such a degree that a comparison in that regard was possible. However, this does not mean that the differences are not important or significant.eng
