Plosivane i Bjerkreim. Ein synkron studie av preaspirasjon og klanglause lenes

Abstract

På verdsbasis er preaspirasjon eit sjeldant språkljodsfenomen. I Europa finn ein det berre i nord, og det er eit arealfenomen. Ein finn det millom anna i islandsk, færøysk, skotsk-gælisk, sume dialektar i Noreg, Sverige og England, og i flestalle samiske språk. Eitt av hovudfyremåli med denne uppgåva er å granska plosivane til tri informantar frå Bjerkreim kommune (i Rogaland) i mange ulike fonologiske kontekstar for å kunna påvisa at preaspirasjonen er systematisk her. Eit anna hovudfyremål er å påvisa systematiskt klanglause, uaspirerte plosivar (lenes, /b, d, ɡ/ [p, t, k]) i kontekstar som framljod, innljod og utljod. Soleis gjeng det distinktive skiljet enkelt sagt millom [±aspirert], og ikkje [±klangfør]. Det er i tidlegare litteratur hevda at der er distinktiv postaspirasjon i innljod og utljod i Bjerkreim, men med denne uppgåva syner eg at den påstanden ikkje held vatn. Eg nyttar akustisk og auditiv analyse for å påvisa preaspirasjon hjå informantane. Eg hev sjølv gjort ljodupptak av dei tri informantane, med ordlisteupplesing, upplesing av "Nordavinden og soli", og samtale. Med utgangspunkt hovudsakleg i ljodupptaki av ordi frå ordlistone finn eg preaspirasjon i perioden millom vokalar og fortes (/p, t, k/) i innljod og utljod (ˈVCV, ˈVC, ˈVːCV, ˈVːC). I tillegg til vanleg preaspirasjon er der sumtid homorgan frikasjon fyre plosiven. Dessutan påviser eg i det minste til dels klanglause likvidar /r, l/ fyre fortes. Nasalane /m, n, ŋ/ fyre fortes og lenes er sers markerte og skil seg frå tidlegare skildringar av liknande dialektar, der skiljet truleg gjeng millom relativ lengd, t.d. /mp/ [mpˑ] vs. /mb/ [mˑp]. Eg påviser au klanglause lenes i alle dei fonologiske kontekstane som vert analyserte, inkludert i konsonantgruppor. Med utgangspunkt i den akustiske analysen freistar eg au gjeva fonemisk analyse, og syner til prinsippi hans Trubeckój. Eg nyttar den artikulatoriske fonologien til Browman og Goldstein som modell for å illustrera plosivsystemet i bjerkreimsbu. Eg argumenterer for ein monofonemisk analyse, millom anna fordi han er økonomisk. Då reknar ein preaspirasjon som ein del av fortisplosivar. Homorgan frikasjon fyre fortes vert sett på som preaffrikasjon, og vert rekna som ei form for preaspirasjon i bjerkreimsbu.

Preaspiration is a comparatively rare phonetic feature in the world's languages. In Europe it is only found in the north, and it is regarded as an areal feature. It is found in e.g. Icelandic, Faroese, Scottish Gaelic, some dialects in Norway, Sweden and England, and in almost all Sami languages. One of the main objectives of this thesis is to investigate the stop systems of three informants from the municipality of Bjerkreim (in the county of Rogaland, Norway) in many different phonological environments in order to establish the existence of systematic preaspiration here. Another main objective is to demonstrate systematic voiceless, unaspirated stops (lenes, /b, d, ɡ/ [p, t, k]) in environments like word-initially, word-medially and word-finally. Thus the distinctive feature pertains to [±aspiration], not [±voice]. In previous literature it is asserted that in the dialect of Bjerkreim there is distinctive postaspiration also word-medially and word-finally, but as will be seen in this thesis, this assertion does not hold water. The present author uses acoustic and auditory analysis in order to demonstrate preaspiration in the speech of the informants. Fieldwork has been conducted by the author himself, comprising the informants individually reciting word lists, reading the fable "The North Wind and the Sun", and conversations with the author. Based primarily on the word list recitation data, preaspiration is demonstrated in the interval between vowels and fortes (/p, t, k/) word-medially and word-finally (ˈVCV, ˈVC, ˈVːCV, ˈVːC). In addition to ordinary preaspiration, there is sometimes homorganic frication before the stop. Furthermore, at least partially voiceless liquids /r, l/ before fortes are attested. The nasals /m, n, ŋ/ before fortes and lenes are very marked and differ from previous accounts on similar dialects, the difference probably constituted by relative length, e.g. /mp/ [mpˑ] vs. /mb/ [mˑp]. Voiceless lenes are also demonstrated in all the phonological environments that are analysed, including in consonant clusters. Drawing on the acoustic analysis, a preliminary phonemic analysis is given, inspired by the phonological principles of Trubetzkoy. In addition, the articulatory phonology by Browman and Goldstein is used as a model to illustrate the stop system in the dialect of Bjerkreim. It will be seen that the present author argues for a monophonemic interpretation, offering reasons such as economy. In this analysis preaspiration is regarded as a part of the fortis stops. Also, homorganic frication before fortes is regarded as preaffrication, and considered a subtype of preaspiration in the Bjerkreim dialect.
