Når nyhetsjournalistikken møter ekstrem islamisme: En studie av redaksjonelle dilemmaer og utfordringer

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven studerer de redaksjonelle dilemmaene og utfordringene som kan oppstå i nyhetsjournalistikkens møte med ekstrem islamisme. Ved å bruke den norske ultrakonservative, sunnimuslimske grupperingen Profetens Ummah som case kartlegger jeg hvilke dilemmaer og utfordringer som kan oppstå. Jeg undersøker også om dilemmaene og utfordringene har endret seg siden gruppa dukket opp i den norske offentligheten i september 2012, og ser nærmere på hvordan redaksjonene håndterer de vanskelige problemstillingene når de oppstår. Undersøkelsen baserer seg på en kvalitativ tekstanalyse av et utvalg nyhetsoppslag i VG, Aftenposten og NRK, og kvalitative forskningsintervjuer med utvalgte journalister og redaksjonelle ledere i de tre nyhetsmediene. Teoretisk plasserer oppgaven seg innenfor den institusjonelle tilnærmingen til nyhetsproduksjon. Videre analyseres undersøkelsens empiriske funn med utgangspunkt i forskningslitteratur om forholdet mellom journalister og kilder, teori om nyhetsjournalistikkens rolle i defineringen av sosiale avvik samt teori om konstruksjon av trusler og fiendebilder i mediene. Sammen avdekker tekstanalysen og intervjuene flere typer dilemmaer og utfordringer. I tekstanalysen sporet jeg mulige journalistiske dilemmaer og utfordringer knyttet til valg av vinkling, kildebruk, ordvalg, layout/presentasjon, bilde – og videobruk. Når det gjelder hva informantene selv anser som de største dilemmaene og utfordringene, kan disse grupperes i plassbruk, kildeproblematikk, identifiseringsutfordringer og sikkerhet. Videre indikerer funn fra undersøkelsen at de redaksjonelle dilemmaene og utfordringene i saker om Profetens Ummah har endret seg i tiden etter 2012, som følge av økt mediefokus på norske islamister som reiser til Syria. Et annet funn er at det er de normale redaksjonelle rutinene som skal sikre en presseetisk god nyhetsdekning av Profetens Ummah.

This master's thesis examines the editorial dilemmas and challenges that may arise when news journalism meets Islamic extremism. By using Profetens Ummah, a Norwegian ultra-conservative Sunni Muslim group, as a case, I seek to identify different editorial dilemmas and challenges, and to find out if they have changed since the group first became known to the general public in September 2012. I also look into how the editorial staff handle the dilemmas and challenges when they arise. These issues are examined through a qualitative text analysis of news articles from VG, Aftenposten and NRK, and qualitative interviews with journalists and editorial leaders in the three news organizations mentioned. The research question is addressed in the context of an institutional approach to the news. Furthermore, the findings are discussed in light of earlier studies and theories on the relationship between journalists and sources, the role of the news media in defining deviance, and the construction of threats and enemy images in the news. Together, the text analysis and the interviews reveal various types of dilemmas and challenges. The text analysis identified possible journalistic dilemmas and challenges related to choice of news angle, use of sources, choice of words, layout and the use of photos and videos. When it comes to what the journalists and the editorial leaders themselves consider to be the most important dilemmas and challenges, the analysis shows that these concern how much space should be given to extremists, the use of sources, the question of identification (should the person they are doing a news story on be identified or not) and safety for the editorial staff. Results from the study also indicate that the editorial dilemmas and challenges related to Profetens Ummah have changed since 2012, as a result of increased media attention on Norwegian Islamic extremists traveling to Syria to fight in the civil war. The findings also show that it is the normal editorial routines and practices that are to secure an ethical news coverage of Profetens Ummah.
