By og bad. En studie av romerske badeanlegg i sin urbane kontekst

Abstract

I tillegg til å skulle ivareta befolkningens hygiene hadde badet en betydelig funksjon som sosialt samlingspunkt i romerske byer, og store ressurser ble lagt ned i å bygge og vedlikeholde slike anlegg. For å forstå den romerske byen er det derfor viktig å kjenne til badenes rolle i det urbane bildet. Et sentralt tema i denne oppgaven er badenes samfunnsmessige funksjon, men den behandler også viktige praktiske sider ved badene, som vannforsyning, kloakk, fyringsmetoder, energibehov og tilgang på ved til brensel, samt badenes plassering i byen. Oppgaven bygger i hovedsak på studier av Stabianerbadet i Pompeii og Forumbadet i Ostia. Egne beregninger av arealer har her vært brukt for å kunne bestemme brenselsbehovet og de ulike avdelingenes funksjon i publikums bruk av badet. Gjennom en komparativ analyse av de to badene prøver oppgaven å besvare spørsmål om endring i badekulturen over tid, om ulike løsninger på badeanleggets drift og om badenes plassering og betydning i sine respektive byer.

In addition to taking care of the hygiene of the population the bath had a considerable function as a place of social rallying in Roman cities, and great resources were invested in building and maintaining such installations. In order to understand the Roman city it is therefore essential to know the role of the bath in the urban picture. A central topic of this paper is the social function of the baths, but important practical aspects of the bathing complexes have also been dealt with, such as water supply, sewage, methods of heating, need of energy, and access to fuel, as well as the allocation of baths in the city plans. The paper is mainly built on studies of the Stabian Bath in Pompeii and the Forum Bath in Ostia. Measurements of areas have been carried out by myself in order to determine the needs of fuel and the relative functions of various sections of the baths in the use of the public. By means of a comparative analysis of the two bathing complexes the paper tries to answer questions concerning changes in the Roman bathing culture throughout the times and various solutions of the operation of the baths, as well as the allocation and importance of the baths in their respective cities.
