Abstract
Couchsurfing.com is an online hospitality exchange network that facilities global travel by allowing its community of members to both surf with and host fellow members. In this study I explore how Couchsurfing.com serves as a platform for connecting users that want to try couchsurfing. In the thesis I assess couchsurfing users motivation for joining the site, what factors create trust and security between users and how users present themselves via their online profiles. I do this by conducting qualitative interviews with couchsurfing users and through a quantitative content analysis of the information provided by users in their couchsurfing profiles. Results from the study indicate that meeting new people and the opportunity for experiencing authentic travel and cultures are the primary motives for members in using Couchsurfing.com. Several of the users interviewed in the study have inherent trust in other people, which results in a higher capability for trusting fellow couchsurfing users. Those interviewed all utilise the tools provided by Couchsurfing.com, such as the referencing system and user profiles, to build trust when they decide with whom to engage on the site, while some interviewees also used other social networking sites for supplementary information. The study showed a variation in user awareness in terms of how they presented themselves online. The findings suggest reluctance by couchsurfing users in wanting to host or surf with people with negative references. However, the results from the quantitative content analysis of couchsurfing profiles indicated that negative references in profiles are uncommon.
