Abstract
The defense industry is a global enterprise – one dominated by the United States of America. Critics have claimed that contractors within the US defense industry are acting as powerful political entities instead of dutiful agents – not taking environmental and social responsibility and participating in an unhampered distribution of weapons where the goal is to maximize profits while neglecting any ethical responsibility. This thesis aims to shed light on how the contractors within the US defense industry represent themselves through their corporate communications – especially vis-à-vis their presumed national reputations for, and perceived interests in peacemaking. More precisely, I uncover the frames utilized by Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin in their non-economical reports to defend or legitimize their operations and existence. The industry as a whole and the individual firms within it are viewed as strategic actors who use frames intentionally to obtain and maintain a good reputation and a license to operate. My findings show that certain frames predominate in the defense industry’s corporate communications. These frames illustrate how the contractors address themselves as security companies in a defense industry that is presented as both an important and necessary corporate citizen, integrating sustainable, economical, environmental and ethical values for the greater good of society. The industry advocates that they are in compliance to the most rigorous laws of the nation, and that the industry itself is the most regulated in the United States – and therefore should be viewed as legitimate. The oxymoron of producing arms and being socially responsible is met by the industry’s claim of filling the needs of delivering solutions to solve complex challenges in an unsafe world where threats are rising – while reinvesting in the communities in which they operate.
Oppgavens funn viser at visse tolkningsrammer dominerer i forsvarsindustriens selskapskommunikasjon.
