To understand the complex subject of Islamism, two Sunni groups with a different Modus Operandi have been selected to give a better understanding of Islamism as a phenomena: The Society of the Muslim Brothers, also known as the Muslim Brotherhood who was elected as the party winner in Egypt in 2012 through its political party Freedom and Justice Party and the architects of global jihad; al-Qaida. al-Qaida is one of the most known Islamist groups today due to the attacks on the U.S. in 2001. The attack led to an introduction of militant Islamism in the Western world and a new security situation for the U.S and its´ allies. These are two Sunni Muslim organizations that have been crucial in the development of Modern Islamism. Some comparisons can be made and will help us understand the complexity of modern Islamism. In addition this thesis will look at disagreements regarding appropriate means especially on the subject of armed struggle versus a long-term and peaceful strategy. From a historical point of view there are distinguished features that correspond between the two movements. But most of all it is important to notice that The Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaida are learning organizations and are highly adaptable to change their modus operandi to gain their goals.eng
