Klarhet, kompleksitet og kontrast: en komparativ analyse av orkestreringen i Vårofferet og Skytisk Suite.

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven er en komparativ analyse av orkestreringen i Vårofferet (1913) av Igor Stravinsky, og Skytisk Suite (1914-15) av Sergej Prokofiev. Verkene har likhetstrekk i at de begge har et voldsomt, komplekst uttrykk, samt at de er skrevet for gigantiske orkestre. På den ene siden er oppgaven en analyse av orkestreringen i to svært komplekse verker skrevet på samme tid. På den andre siden forsøker oppgaven å gi en vurdering av hvorvidt orkestreringen i det sistnevnte verket, ligner på orkestreringen i det førstnevnte. Orkestreringsanalyse er et felt som er underrepresentert i musikkvitenskapen, sammenlignet med formanalyse og harmonisk analyse. Oppgaven er et forsøk på å gi mer kunnskap til dette feltet, særlig i møte med relativt kompleks musikk. Tre sentrale aspekter i en orkestreringanalyse er tekstur, klangfarge og harmonikk. Temaer som diskuteres inngående i relasjon til dette er balansen mellom klarhet, kompleksitet og kontrast, som også er tittelen på oppgaven. Begge verkene er svært komplekse, men forholder seg til klarhet og kontrast på to vidt forskjellige måter.

This master's thesis is a comparative analysis of the orchestration in The Rite of Spring (1913) written by Igor Stravinsky and Scythian Suite (1914-15) written by Sergej Prokofiev. These two works are similar in that they both have an extreme, complex expression, and are both written for gigantic orchestras. On the one hand, the thesis is an analysis of the orchestration in to very complex works written at the same time. On the other hand, the thesis tries to give an evaluation of whether the orchestration in the latter work, is similar to that of the former. Orchestration analysis is a field that is underrepresented in the field of musicology, in comparison with formal analysis and harmonic analysis. The thesis tries to bring more knowledge to this particular field of musicology, especially with regard to relatively complex music. Three central aspects of orchestration analysis are texture, timbre and harmony. Topics that are discussed in relation to this, is the balance between clarity, complexity and contrast, which is also the title of the thesis. Both works are extremely complex, but relate to clarity and contrast in two very different ways.
