Abstract

I novellesamlingen The Ladies of Grace Adieu (2006) møter leseren et annerledes England. Forfatteren Susanna Clarke (f. 1959) blander historie og fiksjon i fremstillingen av et England som både virker fremmed og forvirrende velkjent. Clarkes univers er komplekst og omfattende, og fortellergrep må derfor brukes strategisk, både for å formidle premissene for universet og for å skape en realisme-effekt på tross av tekstenes fantastiske innhold. Omdreiningspunktet for denne studien er litterær verdensbygging. Hvilke fortellergrep får en verdensbyggende funksjon i The Ladies of Grace Adieu, og hvordan interagerer disse med leseren? Sentrale fortellergrep hos Clarke er fiktive paratekster, parodi og pastisj. Oppgaven undersøker funksjonen til intertekstene som aktiveres, og viser hvordan intertekstualitet fungerer som verdensbyggende fortellergrep. De første fire kapitlene tar utgangspunkt på avsendersiden. Her utforskes den fantastiske verdensbyggingens retorikk og den fiktive verdenens narrative struktur. Oppgavens femte og siste kapittel vender oppmerksomheten mot mottakeren, dvs. leseren. Hva slags leser forutsetter verdensbyggende tekster? Her undersøkes det hvordan Clarkes fortellergrep legger føringer for lesningen, og hvordan ulike lesergrupper responderer på Clarkes verdensbygging.

The short story collection The Ladies of Grace Adieu (2006) introduces the reader to a different England. Author Susanna Clarke (1959) mixes fact with fiction in her depiction of an England that appears both strange and strangely familiar. Clarke s fictional universe is a complex structure, which relies on strategic use of narrative techniques in order for the reader to understand the universe s principles – its rules – and in order for the fictional world to gain a realistic quality in spite of the texts fantastic content. This thesis is a study on the construction of fictional worlds in literature – so-called worldbuilding . Which narrative strategies attain a worldbuilding function in The Ladies of Grace Adieu and how do these interact with the reader? Parody, pastiche and fictive paratexts are central among Clarke s narrative techniques. This thesis examines the function of the intertexts activated by various kinds of imitation and demonstrates how intertextuality assumes a worldbuilding function in The Ladies of Grace Adieu. The first four chapters examine worldbuilding from the sender s, or author s, point of view. Here, the rhetoric of fantastic worldbuilding and the fictional universe s narrative structure is explored. In the fifth and final chapter the focus shifts to the reader. What kind of reader does a worldbuilding text imply? This chapter examines in what way Clarke s narrative strategies direct the reader s reading process and how different kinds of readers respond to Clarke s worldbuilding in different ways.
