| nor |
dc.description.abstract | Background: The background for this study was to identify predictive factors of radial artery occlusion (RAO) during or after transradial coronary angiography. We also wanted to find out how Norwegian coronary intervention centers practice according to these factors. Methods: The first part of this project is a literature review based on a non-systematic search on PubMed. We also found statistics in the journal Hjerteforum, by Norsk Cardiologisk Forening. The last part of the project is based on email exchange with the eight Norwegian Coronary Intervention Centers for statistics regarding their practice. Results: RAO has a stronger association with non-patent hemostasis than the duration of hemostasis. Administration of heparin is the single most important factor to prevent RAO; however the correct doses need to be clarified. Sheath size, concomitant medication, especially statins and administration of spasmolytic agents like nitroglycerin and calcium channel blockers are also predictive factors for RAO. In Norway there are no consensus regarding the radial approach and we have identified the practice in all Norwegian centers. Conclusion: We have identified five predictive factors of RAO, the two most important being administration of heparin during the procedure and patent hemostasis after the procedure. | eng |
