Forholdet mor-barn i serien "You can't keep a good rabbit down" av Vanessa Baird.

Abstract

Avhandlingen diskuterer forholdet mor-barn i Vanessa Bairds serie You can t keep a good rabbit down. Serien ble produsert i perioden 1999-2001 og består totalt av 18 tegninger og akvareller med sterke selvbiografiske trekk. I tillegg undersøker avhandlingen på hvilken måte serien kan settes inn i en feministisk tradisjon. Felles for mor og barn er at de kvitter seg med kroppsvæsker som vi normalt forbinder med det frastøtende som oppkast, urin, snørr osv. I tolkning av disse verker anvendes Julia Kristevas abjektteori. Det er en psykoanalytisk og lingvistisk teori om morskroppens funksjon i subjektdannelsen, og som legger stor vekt på barnet behov for å kvitte seg med en kroppsvæske for å bli et selvstendig subjekt. Teorien kan også knyttes til identitetsdannelsen i forbindelse med at identiteten trues. Dette aspektet diskuteres i relasjon til de motiver hvor moren kvitter seg med kroppsvæsker. Med det utgangspunktet undersøkes det om forholdet mor-barn også kan leses som en trussel for morens kunstneriske identitet. I forbindelse med undersøkelsen om serien kan settes inn i en feministisk tradisjon, sammenligner jeg med andre feministiske kunstnerskap som for eksempel Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith og Tracey Emin, samt Eline Mugaas og Catti Brandelius. For å perspektivere Bairds serie og forholdet mor-barn er også den feministiske kunstneren Mary Kellys serie Past partum document 0-6, inkludert i avhandlingen. Den omhandler et mor-barn forhold som uttrykkes gjennom dokumentarisk materiale, som inneholder og viser i tillegg gjennom skitne bleier, hva barnet har kvittet seg med av avfallstoffer.

This thesis addresses the mother-child relationship in Vanessa Baird’s series You can’t keep a good rabbit down. The works were produced in the period 1999-2001 and consist of a total of 18 drawings and watercolours with distinct autobiographical references. In addition, the thesis examines how the series may be placed in a feminist tradition. A common trait of mother and child is that they rid themselves of bodily fluids that are ordinarily regarded as repugnant: vomit, urine, nasal mucus etc. In interpreting these works, the thesis applies Julia Kristeva’s theory of abjection. This is a psychoanalytical and linguistic theory of the maternal body’s function in subject formation, which attributes great significance to the child’s need to rid itself of bodily fluids in order to become an independent subject.

The theory of abjection may also be linked to the formation of identity in response to a threat to self. This aspect is discussed in relation to the motifs in which the mother rids herself of bodily fluids. From this premise, the thesis explores whether the mother-child relationship can be interpreted as a threat to the mother’s artistic identity.

In addressing whether the themes of the series can be placed in a feminist tradition, the thesis draws comparisons with other feminist artists such as Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith and Tracey Emin, along with Eline Mugaas and Catti Brandelius.

In order to put Baird’s series and the mother-child relationship and maternal identity into perspective, the thesis includes artist Mary Kelly’s series Post-Partum Document 0-6 from the 1970s.
