Abstract
Yugoslavia is long gone, and in the aftermath of the bloody civil war that reigned over the region several films have been made with the war as theme. Serving as accounts for what had happened, these films were, and continue to be, important for the public in the respective countries that once constituted Yugoslavia, as well as the world outside. In today s post – Yugoslavia there is, in addition to somewhat of a crisis of national identity, a new kind of war going on. The war the homosexuals lead in order to get support in their own societies instead of being put down and subjected to homophobia. Like through films of the war, portrayals of life in traumatic times, in this case being subjected to homophobia and restricted freedom, can perhaps contribute to a reconciliation in society and a renewed sense of justice for homosexuals and others in the post – Yugoslav LGBT community. Keeping in mind these issues, and studying the connection between nationalism and homophobia, this thesis will use comparative analysis to expose how homosexuals are portrayed in the films Go West by director Ahmed Imamovic (2005), and Parada by Srdjan Dragojevic (2011), respectively.
