Defining and Living with the Past : Temporal and narrative layers in Arti Spiegelman's Maus

Abstract

This thesis examines Spiegelman’s use of the graphic novel as a medium to visualize the connections between the present and the past. It looks at how the comics medium allows for narrative and temporal layers that can challenge traditional ways of representing memory. The thesis therefore explains how Maus not only is a narration of memory, but also a narration on memory.
